Become an AmeriCorps Maryland Grantee

We engage Marylanders in meaningful community service while supporting programs that address local needs. Through grantmaking, we partner with subgrantees to offer resources, compliance support, and strategic guidance–helping organizations strengthen communities  in areas like education, economic opportunity, and capacity building.

Current Maryland AmeriCorps state and national portfolio Subgrantees

The programs listed below are part of the Maryland AmeriCorps State and National portfolio. These programs reflect the diversity of service opportunities across the state, and each organization plays a vital role in addressing community needs, expanding access to opportunity, and strengthening neighborhoods throughout the state.

  • ASTAR (Frostburg State University): ASTAR (Appalachian Service Through Action and Resources) focuses on providing direct, substantive services to meet community needs. ASTAR partners with agencies statewide to enhance their capacity through AmeriCorps members who support activities such as educational programming, field trips, campus outreach, health and wellness initiatives, drug awareness education, senior programming, food pantries, and community gardens.
    • ASTAR welcomes both students and community members—membership is not limited to FSU students. To be eligible to serve, applicants must:

      • Be at least 18 years old
      • Hold a GED or high school diploma (or equivalent)
      • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident
      • Successfully pass a multi-point criminal history check

  • Civic Works Service Corps: Civic Works strengthens Baltimore’s communities through education, skills development, and community service.
    • Civic Works AmeriCorps members tutor students, grow healthy food, create outdoor community spaces, help older adults age in place and more.

  • City Teaching Alliance: City Teaching Alliance’s mission is to identify, prepare, and retain exceptional career educators who are empowered and equipped to make a lasting impact on the academic and life outcomes of all learners.
    • In Maryland, City Teaching Alliance prepares long-term teachers in Baltimore City, improving academic and social-emotional skills for nearly 4,000 students.

  • Community Art Collaborative (Maryland Institute College of Art): The work of CAC member artists provides children, youth, and adults with the benefits of after-school, arts-based learning experiences, and strengthens neighborhoods through community art initiatives. Community Art Collaborative engages over 600 K–12 youth in community-based arts programming by partnering with nonprofit organizations, schools, museums, and community centers across Baltimore City, who host CAC AmeriCorps Member artists for residencies.
  • Community Mediation Maryland: Community Mediation Corps – CMM’s AmeriCorps Program, engages the community to actualize social change, remove barriers to community mediation, and increase the number of mediations for those who live, work, or attend school in Maryland.
    • AmeriCorps members serve as Mediation Specialists in community-based organizations. Members are responsible for direct service (mediation) and capacity building efforts. that focus on increasing the number of mediations that get to the table.

  • Digital Harbor Foundation: The Harbor Navigators Program leverages AmeriCorps members to help Baltimore City residents access important services and tools through technology. This includes things like city services, telemedicine, online education, and remote work opportunities. Their goal is to make sure that everyone, especially those who have been historically underserved, has the support they need to use technology confidently and effectively.
  • Equity Now, Inc (Legends Charter School): Equity Now Fellows provide academic and social-emotional support to approximately 900 students at Legends Charter School in Lanham, MD.
  • Improve Your Tomorrow: IYT Mentors provide the following services across programs:
    • Lead student development workshops, including but not limited to college advising, civic engagement, character education, and life skills.
    • Collaborate with educators, school staff, and community partners to cultivate a vibrant student driven culture that values resilience, authenticity, and passion.
    • Participate in leadership development sessions to hone leadership skills.
    • Fellows will become part of the greater AmeriCorps Volunteer Network and will receive a biweekly living allowance and an education award.

  • LAYC: LAYC programs and services are designed to address the multiple needs of the young people and families in the communities we serve. Through opportunities in academics, arts and recreation, job readiness, safe housing, and health and wellness, LAYC works to support youth in overcoming challenges and reaching their full potential.
  • Sewa International: Sewa International provides homework help, English-language support, and wellness assistance to middle school students in Montgomery County.
  • ShoreCorps (Salisbury University): ShoreCorps partners with over 25 agencies on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to expand their reach and capacity through service. ShoreCorps/AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to:
    • Gain experience serving with a non-profit organization, government agency, or a school
    • Develop invaluable skills involving leadership and teamwork
    • Participate in a lively learning community of fellow AmeriCorps members
    • Participate in a national service movement

  • Teach For America Maryland: Teach For America Maryland places educators in Baltimore City schools to increase academic achievement. The TFA corps is a full-time, paid opportunity to lead in a classroom, where Members make a real difference with students who are underserved and underestimated.
    • Quick Facts:
      • Full time, paid, two-year leadership role teaching in under-resourced K-12 schools
      • Same salary and benefits as other first-year teachers, with additional TFA support
      • Premier coaching and mentorship to help you grow in and beyond the classroom
      • Measurable impact in students' lives
  • The Choice Program at UMBC: The Choice Program within the University of Maryland Baltimore County provides mentoring, enrichment, education, and workforce development services to youth and families in Baltimore City and surrounding counties.
  • YES! Youth Educational Services:The Youth Educational Services program (YES!) provides academic enrichment, arts and cultural programming, wellness activities, and service-learning opportunities for students in the Park Heights community of Baltimore.
  • Project CHANGE: Project CHANGE mentors and coaches students in high-need areas of Montgomery County to strengthen social-emotional skills and attitudes.
